Kingsford\u2019s new initiative, Pass the Tongs, partners with historically Black colleges and universities, or HBCUs, to celebrate grilling traditions and empower the next generation of grillers through culture, education, and connection. We talked with Kingsford\u2019s Danielle Chan to learn more about the kickoff event and what\u2019s ahead for the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was the inspiration behind Pass the Tongs?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Kingsford has a longstanding commitment to preserving barbecue tradition, sparking connection, and championing future changemakers. For example, Kingsford has invested more than $355,000 into the barbecue community since 2021 through its Preserve the Pit initiative, which provided one-on-one mentorship to 15 entrepreneurs, monetary grants, and resources to 35 businesses nationwide.

Pass the Tongs is the next step in Kingsford\u2019s journey. It\u2019s about honoring legacy while empowering the next generation. By partnering with HBCUs, we\u2019re sharing knowledge, preserving rich culinary traditions, and creating space for cultural continuity.<\/p>\n\n\n

What Pass the Tongs activations do you have planned? What can guests expect?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In total, there are four flavor-filled experiences planned in the Atlanta area. Our first event included a lively grill-off and sampling opportunity at the Atlanta Greek Picnic on July 26.

Our upcoming schedule also includes:

Morehouse Hump Wednesday <\/strong>(Aug. 27): Kingsford is hosting a fireside chat featuring Morehouse Student moderator Isaiah Evans and acclaimed actress and Dream Above The Influence founder Gail Bean. The conversation will explore the tradition and importance of cultural preservation through the lens of barbecue heritage.

Taste of Soul Atlanta <\/strong>(Aug. 30): Kingsford will be showcasing regional barbecue styles and celebrating the rich traditions of culinary heritage with expertly curated flavors.

SpelHouse Homecoming<\/strong> (Oct. 18): Kingsford will host a cookout experience with hands-on grilling stations and a special appearance by celebrity pitmaster and Preserve the Pit alum Pat Neely to enrich the event\u2019s celebration of community and tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does Pass the Tongs support Kingsford\u2019s growth aspirations?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Pass the Tongs is a key part of Kingsford\u2019s ambition to connect with the next generation of grillers in meaningful ways. By creating immersive, community-centered experiences, we\u2019re engaging new audiences and deepening brand relevance where tradition and passion already thrive. This initiative helps drive awareness by meeting people where they are \u2014 at the intersection of food, culture, and celebration \u2014 while building long-term affinity through shared experiences that matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
